In deze ruimte ontmoet je tientallen Amsterdammers die volgens kunstenaar Raquel van Haver (1989) niet vergeten mogen worden. Geïnspireerd door de portrettraditie van 17de- en 18de-eeuwse kunstenaars vereeuwigde ze hen op zes nieuwe groepsportretten. Vroeger legden Hollandse schilders de Amsterdamse politieke en maatschappelijke leiders vaak in opdracht vast. Van Haver koos er juist op eigen initiatief voor om Amsterdamse stadsveranderaars – bekend of niet – uit de afgelopen zestig jaar te portretteren.
Voor The Collateral Kin (De Verwantschap) interviewde Van Haver tientallen mensen. Activisten, schrijvers, rappers, bouwers, buurtbewoners. Welke strijd gingen zij aan binnen de stad? Wie heeft een verschil gemaakt? En wie verdient ook een plek in de spotlights? In de persoonlijke gesprekken ontdekte Van Haver hun verhalen en drijfveren. Ze presenteert deze inspirerende Amsterdammers rond zes thema’s: educatie, cultuur, wonen in de stad, de leefbare stad, saamhorigheid en verbinding, en papierloos in de stad.
In samenwerking met het Amsterdam Museum documenteerde Van Haver haar onderzoek naar de geportretteerden. Hun verhalen blijven ook toegankelijk in de toekomst via de database van het Stadsarchief Amsterdam. Kom hier oog in oog te staan met deze Amsterdammers, een eerbetoon aan de stadsveranderaars van nu voor de stad van morgen.

This hall introduces dozens of Amsterdammers who, according to artist Raquel van Haver (1989), must not be forgotten. Inspired by the portrait painting tradition of 17th- and 18th-century artists, she has immortalized her subjects in six new group portraits. In the past, Dutch painters often received commissions to depict Amsterdam’s political and social elite. On her own initiative, Van Haver chose to portray individuals—well-known or otherwise—from the past 60 years who have changed the city.
For The Collateral Kin, Van Haver interviewed dozens of individuals: activists, writers, rappers, builders, local residents. What did they fight for in the city? Who made a difference? And who deserves a place in the spotlight? Through these personal conversations she uncovered their stories and motivations. She presents these inspiring Amsterdammers based on six themes: education, culture, urban living, a livable city, solidarity and connection, and paperless in the city.
In collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum, Van Haver documented her research on the portrayed individuals. Their stories will remain accessible in the future through the database of the Amsterdam City Archives. Here you can come face to face with these Amsterdammers in a tribute to today’s agents of change, for the city of tomorrow.

The Teacher of Knowledge (Educator van de Leer), 2025
De mensen op dit groepsportret zetten zich in voor educatie, gedreven door de overtuiging dat kennis macht is. Jongeren leren op school over de samenleving, maar voelen zich niet altijd vertegenwoordigd in de lesstof. Daarom gebruikt rapper en docent Kiddo Cee (Chander Peroti) hiphop-muziek als aanleiding voor gesprekken met leerlingen. Rapteksten gaan immers ook over de maatschappij of over jezelf leren kennen. Andere geportretteerden willen het onderwijsaanbod veranderen of verrijken. Zo vormde voormalig hoogleraar Gloria Wekker begin jaren 1980 literaire clubs voor vrouwen die geïnteresseerd waren in literatuur van Zwarte schrijvers uit de Caraïben en de Verenigde Staten. Ze werd in 2001 de eerste vrouwelijke hoogleraar van kleur aan de Universiteit Utrecht.
The individuals in this group portrait are committed to education, guided by the belief that knowledge is power. Young people learn about society in school, but they do not always feel represented in the curriculum. Rapper and educator Kiddo Cee (Chander Peroti) therefore uses hip-hop music to start conversations with students. Rap lyrics, after all, are also often about society or getting to know oneself. Others portrayed here seek to change or enrich educational offerings. In the early 1980s, for instance, former professor Gloria Wekker formed literary clubs for women interested in literature by Black authors from the Caribbean and the United States. She became the first female professor of color at Utrecht University in 2001.

Het Amsterdamse culturele landschap verandert in hoog tempo. Op populaire plekken in het centrum stijgen de huurprijzen en de ruimte voor culturele uitingen staat onder druk. Straatkunst, zoals de graffiti van Laser 3.14, is hier steeds minder zichtbaar. Juist in buurten buiten het centrum gebeurt ontzettend veel. Zo organiseren Sara Mattens en Jeffrey Croese van vinger.nl al twintig jaar culturele projecten, van muziekproducties tot kunstroutes en een skatepark. Ze doen dat vooral in de K-buurt, in het hart van de Amsterdamse Bijlmer. Te midden van al die dynamiek, is de wereldwijde bekendheid van Amsterdamse festivals en het nachtleven al decennialang een constante. Zo was dj Joost van Bellen begin jaren 1990 artistiek leider van nachtclub RoXY, de plek waar housemuziek in Nederland groot werd.
Amsterdam’s cultural landscape is changing rapidly. In popular areas of the city center, rents are rising and space for cultural expression is being squeezed out. Street art, like the graffiti by Laser 3.14, is less present. But there’s still a lot going on, particularly in neighborhoods beyond Amsterdam’s center. Sara Mattens and Jeffrey Croese of vinger.nl have organized cultural projects for twenty years, from musical productions to art routes and a skate park. They are active primarily in the K-buurt, at the heart of Amsterdam’s Bijlmer neighborhood. Amidst all this dynamism, the worldwide fame of Amsterdam’s festivals and nightlife has remained constant for decades. In the early 1990s, DJ Joost van Bellen was the artistic director of the nightclub RoXY, the place where house music became big in the Netherlands.

In Amsterdam is een tekort aan betaalbare woningen. Maar liefst 17.000 mensen in de stad zijn dak- of thuisloos. Thuisloze mensen hebben geen vaste verblijfplaats. Ze overnachten vaak bij kennissen of familie. Dakloze mensen moeten hun plek meestal op straat vinden. Filmmaker en sociaal werker André Reeder was in de jaren 1970 actief bij de Landelijke Organisatie van Surinamers in Nederland (LOSON). Met deze emancipatiebeweging kraakte hij onder meer leegstaande flats in de Bijlmer, waar volgens het spreidingsbeleid alleen witte Nederlanders werden toegelaten. Activist en kunstenaar Wouter Stroet is betrokken bij het collectief Mokum Kraakt, dat kraken combineert met artistieke projecten over eigenaarschap van de stad. Geeske Hovingh is coördinator van Maya Angelou Opvang, een plek die aandacht geeft aan mensen in noodsituaties. Dak- en thuisloosheid, armoede en een ongedocumenteerd bestaan gaan immers vaak samen.
In Amsterdam there is a shortage of affordable housing. At least 17,000 people here are homeless or have no fixed abode. Those in the latter category constantly move from place to place, staying overnight with acquaintances or family. Homeless people often have to find a place on the streets. Filmmaker and social worker André Reeder was active in the 1970s in the National Organization of Surinamese in the Netherlands (LOSON). With this civil rights group he squatted buildings, including vacant flats in Amsterdam’s Bijlmer neighborhood. According to the population distribution policy, only white Dutch people were permitted to live there. Activist and artist Wouter Stroet is involved in the Mokum Kraakt collective, which combines squatting with artistic projects about ownership of the city. Geeske Hovingh is coordinator of the Maya Angelou Opvang, a place that offers support to people in crisis. Homelessness, poverty, and living undocumented frequently go hand in hand.

Robin Bruisje is activist en lid van de milieubeweging Extinction Rebellion Fashion Action. Bruisje strijdt tegen de kledingindustrie en greenwashing. Tegen bedrijven die claimen milieuvriendelijk te zijn, ondanks misstanden in het productieproces. Fotograaf en filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen maakt kunst over het wereldwijde voedselsysteem, omdat steeds minder bekend is over de herkomst van eten. In het theaterstuk De zaak Shell (2024) zochten Anoek Nuyens en Rebekka de Wit naar de verantwoordelijken voor de huidige klimaatcrisis. Zijn dat bedrijven, de politiek, of burgers? En wie kan er iets veranderen?
What makes a good living environment in a city? Public green spaces, of course, but those portrayed here make it clear that the less obvious relationship between humans and nature is at least equally important. Robin Bruisje is an activist, and member of the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion’s Fashion Action. Bruisje stands against the clothing industry and greenwashing and fight companies claiming to be environmentally friendly, despite wrongdoings in the production process. Photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen makes art about the global food network, because generally very little is known about the origins of our food. In the play De zaak Shell (The Shell Affair, 2024), Anoek Nuyens and Rebekka de Wit seek out those responsible for the climate crisis. Are they corporations, politicians, or citizens? And who can change something?

Op de achtergrond van dit schilderij zie je de Dappermarkt in Amsterdam-Oost. Hier komen mensen samen om boodschappen te doen, te kletsen of te hangen. Zulke ontmoetingsplekken zijn belangrijk voor een buurt, ook omdat hier soms extra bijstand geboden wordt aan bewoners. Zo geeft Terra Dakota Stein juridisch spreekuur in het buurtcentrum Huis van de Wijk in Amsterdam-Noord. Stichting ACCU zet zich middels community art-projecten in voor lokale bewoners. Het bekendst is waarschijnlijk de ACCUfanfare, een straatorkest met muziekinvloeden uit de hele wereld, onder leiding van Septimia Kuhlmann en Jos Zandvliet. Ook eten verbindt mensen. Het bedrijf Mooncake van foodblogger Jonneke de Zeeuw wil bewust kleine ondernemers met verschillende eetculturen op de kaart zetten. Alle geportretteerden dragen actief bij aan de sociale cohesie. Ze bevorderen het gevoel van veiligheid, vertrouwen en betrokkenheid bij elkaar en bij hun leefomgeving.
The Dappermarkt in Amsterdam-Oost can be seen in the background of this painting, a place where people come together to shop, chat, or hang out. Meeting spots like this are important for a neighborhood, in part because they sometimes provide additional assistance for residents. Terra Dakota Stein, for instance, offers legal consultations at the Huis van de Wijk community center in Amsterdam-Noord. Stichting ACCU shows its commitment to local residents through community art projects. The best known is probably the ACCUfanfare, a street orchestra with musical influences from around the globe, led by Septimia Kuhlmann and Jos Zandvliet. Food also connects people. Mooncake, a company owned by food blogger Jonneke de Zeeuw, works to promote small entrepreneurs who represent different food cultures. All the individuals portrayed are active contributors to social cohesion. They foster a sense of security, trust, and involvement with each other and their living environment.

In Amsterdam woont een grote groep mensen zonder verblijfsvergunning. Regelmatig is hier ook geen zicht op, terwijl terugkeer naar het land van herkomst ook onmogelijk is. Op dit groepsportret staan deze mensen zonder papieren centraal. Sommige geportretteerden zijn ervaringsdeskundigen, zoals Korotimi. Zij maken gebruik van het Wereldhuis, een centrum voor ongedocumenteerde mensen om de hoek van het Amsterdam Museum. Stichting De Vrolijkheid, geleid door Matea Šafar, speelt een cruciale rol voor jongeren in Nederlandse asielzoekerscentra. Dertig jaar geleden richtte Regina Mac-Nack in Amsterdam-Zuidoost de voedselbank Hoop voor Morgen op, voor mensen zonder papieren. Dankzij al deze initiatieven krijgen ongedocumenteerde mensen zorg en aandacht, wat des te belangrijker is omdat de stad niet aan al deze mensen opvang of hulp biedt.
A large group of people living in Amsterdam do not have a residence permit. Their status often remains uncertain, and yet returning to their country of origin is also impossible. This group portrait is dedicated to people without residence papers. Some of them can speak from personal experience, such as Korotimi. They make use of the Wereldhuis, a center for undocumented persons around the corner from the Amsterdam Museum. The De Vrolijkheid Foundation, led by Matea Šafar, plays a crucial role for young people in Dutch centers for asylum seekers. Thirty years ago, Regina Mac-Nack founded the Hoop voor Morgen food bank in Amsterdam-Zuidoost for undocumented people. Thanks to all these initiatives, undocumented people receive care and attention, which is all the more important because the city does not provide shelter or assistance to everyone in this situation.
