Freedom the one thing that matters. It is the departure, a new start. – Max Beckmann
The opening exhibition, All Directions, features over 150 artworks and objects drawn from the Fenix collection, supplemented by a number of loans, which has been assembled over the last five years and will continue to evolve. The display spans the first floor of the museum and includes works by renowned and emerging artists from around the globe, both historical and contemporary, which have been acquired by or commissioned especially for the new museum. These are presented alongside historical artefacts with links to migration, including a UNHCR tent, a fragment of the western part of the Berlin Wall, and a Nansen passport from 1923 which were issued to people who were stateless after the First World War. Members of the local community have been invited to loan personal items that tell their own story of migration, of cultural roots or journeys taken to reach their new home in the Netherlands.
Luz Brilhante e Cintilante (2023 – 25) Raquel van Haver (Colombia, 1989), Ivan Barbosa (Nederland, 1979) Studio Raquel van Haver , Jute, oil paint, charcoal, resin, hair, paper, tar and soundscape (by Barbosa) Centring the experiences of over 20,000 Cape Verdeans in Rotterdam, Raquel van Haver’s monumental painting captures moments drawn from photo archives, personal stories and community research. Translating directly as ‘Bright and Sparkling Light’, Van Haver creates what she describes as “loud” paintings that explore the rich traditions of gatherings and rituals. Through a tactile mix of oil, tar, chalk, ash and bottle caps, she conveys intimate narratives of community and belonging. Her layered materials mirror the complex, overlapping stories that form the collective history of the Cape Verdean diaspora in Rotterdam.
