In this exhibition, you will experience how contemporary artists employ textiles to tell stories that matter. Current social themes are translated to installations and tapestries full of poetry and imagination. Multimedia artists in particular use textiles for their specific properties, a long tradition of storytelling and symbolic, artisanal and emotional value.
The exhibition features work from: melanie bonajo and Théo Demans , Afra Eisma, Ada M. Patterson, Otobong Nkanga, patricia kaersenhout and rolando vázquez, Karo Akpokiere, Geo Wyex, Alydia Wever and Ryan Oduber, Raquel van Haver and Bindweefsel.
Van Haver, finds inspiration for her work in conversations with people around her and during her research in different countries. During research periods in Africa and South America she became interested in textile techniques. Together with the Colombian curator Stefannia Doria Rincón, she settled with the Wayuu, an indigenous community on the La Guajira peninsula in Colombia. She learned their braiding and weaving techniques and cooperated with a female weaver, Sindra Tatiana Gonzalez. The two hammocks that Gonzalez wove for her form the starting point for two tactile tapestries that Van Haver developed in the TextielLab. Van Haver brings together geometric Wayuu motifs such as the symbols of fish eyes (Jime Uya) and the seeing eye (Paralo Uya) with her own figurative translation of animals and plants from the mythical stories of the Wayuu. Her title Anayawachijaa: Kai – Kashi (thank you: sun – moon) is a tribute to the weaver. Stefannia Doria Rincón elaborates in the following text on the living conditions and the cultural significance of the weaving tradition for the Wayuu.
