“I want to put down in the present, that behind any color of skin,
there is a human being suffering from discrimination.”
— Delcy Morelos Sandoval
To build bridges between two worlds means linking distinct elements through a connective thread—one that creates space for dialogue and highlights the emergence of hybridizations that reflect both realities.
In Amo a la Reina, artist Raquel van Haver explores her origins through the lens of her aesthetic and academic experiences in Europe. From this encounter emerge images rooted in the visual language of the Dutch Chiaroscuro tradition, where light takes on symbolic, psychological, and at times, even sinister values.
Yet Van Haver reclaims these classical techniques from a contemporary standpoint, using them to question social injustices. Her works foreground the visual richness of daily life, popular culture, and the urgent need to create visibility for those who have not yet had the opportunity to raise their voices.
Through her textured, layered compositions, Van Haver constructs powerful visual narratives that blur boundaries—between past and present, tradition and innovation, visibility and marginalization.
